Rhysand is described as “night triumphant and death incarnate” with night seemingly rippling from him. I found this to be an interesting challenge and wanted to use paint to blend him, literally, into the night. I used glazing techniques from my abstract practice to layer the sky into the portrait itself.

Instead of choosing to place Rhys in the center of the canvas, I chose to emphasis the sky: a symbol for him prioritizing his Court over himself. I chose to make him looking up and out of frame, not at the viewer, because of his constant hope for a better world.
